Aside from its thought-provoking scenes that take on profound subjects like ethics, morality, and self-reinvention, ‘The Good Place’ is also a bountiful source of teachings about love, whether it be romantic love, self-love, or love between friends and family.

In fact, if you think about it, the entire show has always been about love, fundamentally speaking, with cold-hearted Arizona dirtbag Eleanor learning to care for others; Chidi teaching people how to; Tahani finally finding a place in her newfound group of friends after a lifetime of desperately trying to fit in the world; Jason making a not-a-girl entity learn how to feel it; and Michael turning his back on his demonic roots with the help of his aforementioned human test subjects.

‘The Good Place’ is not a love story per se, but it definitely is a story that can empower anyone, even the most cold-hearted humans, to love others even more, or at least try to. And as we celebrate Valentine’s Day, let’s look back at some of the most relatable and soul-stirring lines that the sitcom masterpiece has said about that crazy little beautiful thing called love.

“The point is, people improve when they get external love and support. How can we hold it against them when they don’t?

“If you love someone, set them free. My good friend and yoga pupil, Sting, no last initial, told me that.”

“This is what we’ve been looking for since the day we met. Time. That’s what the Good Place really is — it’s not even a place, really. It’s just having enough time with the people you love.”

“If soulmates do exist, they’re not found. They’re made.”

— Michael, Season 4, The Answer

“I proposed a rule that Chidis shouldn’t be allowed to leave because it would make Eleanors sad, and I could do this forever, zip you around the universe showing you cool stuff, and I’d still never find the justification for getting you to stay. Because it’s a selfish rule. I owe it to you to let you go.”

“Sometimes, when you’re feeling helpless, the secret is to help someone else. Get out of your own head. Trust me. The next time someone asks for help, say yes.”

“I’ll say this to you, my friend, with all the love in my heart and all the wisdom of the universe. Take it sleazy.”

‘Time means nothing. Jeremy Bearimy, baby. We’ll just get through this. And then you and I can chill out in the dot of the I forever.’
