Today, June 15, we celebrate the 75th anniversary of the birth of Senator Miriam Defensor Santiago.

We can only wonder how we would have turned out if we still had Madam Senator by our side. Seeing how our country fails to deal with the pandemic crisis, there isn’t a day when the Filipino youth wouldn’t ask: what if? What if she were the one up there leading us? Such moments often end up making us feel more upset about our current situation because we also know the answer: we would have been in better hands.

Aside from being a fearless and effective politician, the Senator was also very popular with her badass quotes and witty one-liners. As we celebrate her birthday today, let’s look back at some of the most iconic and unforgettable lines from our ‘Iron Lady of Asia’.

“We don’t have enough respect for the rule of law in this country.”

“Handbags, I don’t like them at all because they occupy my hands. My hands always have to be ready in case I need to slap somebody.”

“Maliban sa bone marrow disorder ko, malala ang mga sakit ko. May sakit ako sa puso because I’m always heartbroken when I see corruption.”

Tanong: Kung ang opposite ng ‘pro’ ay ‘con,’ ano naman ang opposite ng ‘progress’? Sagot: Congress.

“I have been the subject of much black propaganda concerning my health. I have never been false to the Filipino people… I will never quit, I will never stop, I will never withdraw.”

“I don’t have a librarian. I have it all in my head.”

“Hindi lahat ng sweet ay loyal sa’yo. Tandaan, sweet nga ang candy, pero nakabalot naman sa plastic.”

“Only my body is sick of cancer, not my brain. Unlike other people who have brain cancers and continue to hold public office.”

“I have no illusions about myself, about my life, about leaving a legacy, or making a mark in people’s lives. We are so insignificant. We are only here for a blink”
