Silent Sanctuary’s unique music greatly reflects on their astounding track record. They’ve been around for over a decade and have had minor lineup changes, but they always remain fresh to the ears. With each album launch garnering headlines as “one of the most awaited releases of the year”, they’ve become one of the most notable rock bands of the 2000s.

As our car squeezed through the crowd of hawker carts and civilians on Teresa Street in Sta. Mesa, we already knew we would be facing a horde of fans inside the Polytechnic University of the Philippines (PUP). With Silent Sanctuary stapled on that night’s bill, it wasn’t a surprise. Due to space constraints inside the PUP gymnasium, however, the whole event was ultimately cancelled.

By the parked cars that also doubled as the performers’ holding area, we were greeted by their lovely manager, Jinky Tuazon. In the middle of the commotion, cellist Anjo Inacay and drummer Allen Calixto ungrudgingly caught up with us. Anjo states that they always had fun playing for the patrons of PUP so they were quite bummed that the event was officially called off. Allen, on the other hand, was speechless over the events that had just played out.

Growing up with different music backgrounds, it seems impossible that they’re able to work together; Allen’s cites bands like Metallica and The Clash as his introduction to music, while Anjo started off with classical training in piano and cello. They got together in college, but Anjo was skeptical of what he can add to the band’s sound. After all, how does rock and classical music mix?

Well, it started with a Goo Goo Dolls cover that required string arrangements. As they began jamming together, they also began to conceptualize the musical direction of Silent Sanctuary. 16 years later, their distinct rock-meets-classical sound has earned them five studio albums, two million fans on Facebook, and numerous awards from notable music publications.
