Linkin Park Singer’s Suicide and the Mental Health Stigma

Linkin Park fans all over the world are mourning over the loss of the band’s lead singer Chester Bennington. He was found dead in his private residence due to a suspected suicide.

Personally, I listened to a lot of Linkin Park songs during my elementary and high school days. I even remember that there was a time YouTube was flooded with “music videos” of their songs mainly containing footage from popular Animes. My personal favorites include “In the End” and “What I’ve Done”.

Chester Bennington’s Suicide

Bennington’s death was a total shock to both fans and the music industry as well. He even performed live during the funeral of Chris Cornell, who also took his life, back in May.

Suicide is a sensitive topic for most people. Bennington’s suicide garnered mixed reactions on social media.

Some expressed their sadness and grief regarding the Linkin Park lead singer’s passing. Others still decided to attack his character by saying that it was selfish to take his life.

Suicide and Mental Health

Contrary to what people believe, being rich or successful in life does not really equate to happiness and content. Nirvana’s Kurt Cobain also ended his life even though the band was at their prime.

Depression is not something that can be shaken off instantly. People who are having suicidal thoughts should be offered professional help. If you know someone who is thinking of taking their life, it’s best to make sure that they get professional help through suicide hotlines.

The Philippines and the Stigma on Mental Health Problems

Here in the Philippines, the number to call for Hopeline is (02) 804-4637 or 09175584673. The World Health Organization estimates that over 800,000 people take their life each year. The Philippines ranks 150 out of 170 countries in suicide rates, but that doesn’t mean that it should be ignored.

There is also a certain stigma attached to depression, suicide, and mental health problems as a whole. The reactions to Bennington’s suicide clearly illustrates the issue.

Mental health problems and suicidal thoughts should be taken seriously. These so-called “invisible” illnesses actually lead to death.
