Albert Hammond Jr. has a new album coming our way! The LP, titled “Francis Trouble”, draws inspiration from the stillborn death of his twin.

A Musician by Blood

The son of prolific singer-songwriter Albert Louis Hammond, he followed his father’s footsteps and entered the world of music at a young age. He took on rhythm guitar duties for The Strokes alongside Julian Casablancas, Nick Valensi, Nikolai Fraiture, and Fab Moretti when he was only 18 years old. The band’s 2001 debut album “Is This It” shot them to fame and they proceeded to release four studio albums and two EPs after.

Although Casablancas is credited as the primary writer of The Strokes, Hammond Jr. co-wrote the song “Automatic Stop” from their sophomore album. He also scored the band’s tour documentary “In Transit” and reworked them for his solo record titled “Yours To Keep” in 2006. He followed it up with “¿Cómo Te Llama?” in 2008, five-track EP “AHJ” in 2013, and most recently “Momentary Masers” in 2015.

“Francis Trouble”

Hammond Jr.’s “Francis Trouble” draws from a very personal and sensitive matter in his life. In a press release, he mentioned that the album is about “the lingering effects that event has had in his life and music. In November of 1979, Hammond Jr.’s mother, Claudia, miscarried. Although they rushed to the hospital, Claudia and Albert Hammond Sr. were told that the baby [Francis] was far too premature to live. Albert continued to grow inside of his mother undetected until she was nearly six months pregnant.”

He was very much aware of Francis’ existence, but he received new information two years ago that shook him to the core. A literal piece of his twin—a fingernail—stayed with Hammond Jr. until birth. The album explores his lingering sense of connected identity with his unborn twin. Although he touches on a delicate topic, he doesn’t get too dark about it. “What the music says may be serious, but as a medium it should not be questioned, analyzed or taken too seriously,” he’s explained. “I think it should be tarted up, made into a character, a parody of itself.”

Hammond Jr. appeared on Conan last week and debuted “Muted Beatings”, the first single from the album. Fans who pre-order the LP will receive the song as an instant download.

“Francis Trouble” will feature 10 tracks and is set for a release on March 9 from Red Bull Records. Watch out for this one!
