Rendered in the style of Betty Boop and Popeye the Sailor’s producer, Fleischer Studios.

Now, you’re probably thinking “that’s why it’s so familiar!” And it is familiar to a multitude of others whose childhood days were spent in front of the television set (the CRT one that had no remote) watching runs and reruns of our lady, Betty Boop and our man, Popeye the Sailor.

The new animated TV show coming to Netflix is a cartoon adaptation based on the quirky, but very challenging, video game Cuphead also rendered in the same fashion.

The cool art-style of the Fleischer Studios dials us back to the 1920s and 30s when the animation studio was in direct competition with Walt Disney Studios introducing characters such as Betty Boop, Popeye the Sailor, and even Superman! Yes, that quite surprised me too!

Cuphead the video game released by Studio MDHR in 2017 has been creating a buzz in the industry with their ambitious new look that charmingly brings back the old. It’s a run and gun video game which lets players step into the oversized shoes of Cuphead and/or Mugman as they go through charming levels battling their way boss after boss, in order to pay off a debt they had incurred while making the mistake of betting against the devil.

This game is the brainchild of the Moldenhauer brothers who had this grand vision of putting together the two things they’re most passionate about: Fleischer Studios’ enigmatic cartoons and animation, and the weird, subversive worlds of Contra, Metal Slug and Gunstar Heroes. With that in mind, I’ll say this is quite an excellent marriage of the two!
