Out of pure quarantine boredom, UDOU takes on the impossible task of picking out the most memorable episodes of Spongebob Squarepants.

Although it first aired in 1999, Spongebob Squarepants remains to be one of the most-watched, most popular, most talked-about cartoons ever. Audiences from various age brackets– from young millennials to the little kids of today– would instantly recognize the naughty little yellow sea sponge by his looks and by his voice. Spongebob Squarepants, who is best friends with Patrick Star– a starfish– and Sandy– a squirrel who resides under the sea; the most dedicated employee of Krabby Patty– a fast-food chain run by Mr. Krabs; and the loud, annoying neighbor of Squidward Tentacles.

We get it: it’s almost impossible to pick the best episodes of this iconic cartoon because it’s one of those rare shows on TV that never featured a single bad episode. But for a young adult like me who virtually grew up in Bikini Bottom with the underwater gang, there are certain episodes that stand out in my memory, either because they’ve cracked me up in a way that I will never forget or I have watched them for the 62nd time.

Band Geeks

This episode perfectly sums up what the entire cartoon has to offer: a well-written plot, exceptional humor, plus a banger of an ending that lingers in your soul even years after you’ve seen it. The long-lasting impact of this episode is attributed to the legendary rock anthem “Sweet Victory” which Squidward and his marching band performed at a grand sporting event called “Bubble Bowl.”

Idiot Box

Proving how powerful our imaginations can be (as well as the creators’), this episode follows Squidward as he struggles to make sense of how Spongebob and Patrick seem to be having fun inside the box.

F.U.N.

Birthing yet another iconic original song, the episode follows the sponge as he befriends the ever-lonely Plankton and shows him the fun side of having friends.

The Camping Episode

In this episode, the trio of Spongebob, Patrick, and Squidward shows us the dangers of camping a few feet away from your house and how to deal with them: when there’s a lurking sea bear nearby, you’re supposed to draw a circle on the ground and step inside it. It also proves, once again, how Squidward’s negativity will never prevail.

Bubblestand

Spongebob builds a bubble stand and does it loudly, which annoys his neighbor Squidward who is practicing playing the clarinet. The arrogant neighbor then tries to prove that there is nothing challenging about making bubbles, but he fails. By accident, he yells and creates a gigantic bubble which then lifts his home up in the air and sends it crashing down on the ground. This episode is one of the many classic ones that demonstrate how Squidward’s arrogance and hot-headedness have no match against Spongebob’s innocent and colorful bubbliness.
