Is ‘Maleficent: Mistress of Evil’ worth watching?

With it’s nationwide release just two days ago, here are our two-cents on ‘Maleficent: Mistress of Evil’!
Disney live-action films are always watched out for. And ‘Maleficent: Mistress of Evil’ is no exception. So when it was released last October 16, I did not hesitate to buy my ticket for a screening. But ever since the live-action film of ‘The Lion King’, I’ve kind of taken Disney live-action films with a grain of salt. I’m sure I don’t have to tell you how much of a disappointment that was. So here’s our two-cents on ‘Maleficent: Mistress of Evil’!
It’s soooo much better than ‘Aladdin’!
One thing I can absolutely say with confidence is that ‘Maleficent: Mistress of Evil’ is way better than Aladdin! It doesn’t have any fancy dance numbers or powerful hyped-up songs. But what it does have is great acting! We knew this from the first movie, but Angelina Jolie as Maleficent is just absolutely perfect! She pulls off the cold, outspoken, not used to socializing bits effortlessly. Aside from that you also get to see what true evil is like in Michelle Pfeifer as the scheming Queen Ingrith. She was so good at her role that she had me hating on her for real. Kudos as well to the writers, her passive-aggressive lines during the dinner with Maleficent was just bone-chilling.
Aside from that, I just have to say that there is so much death in this film, and yet they presented it in a way that would chill you but not scar children. And some might be opposed, but I think it’s genius because as a parent we should teach children that death is a natural part of life.
Maleficent Live-Action films vs Sleeping Beauty
A lot of people tend to compare live-action films with their original animated version. Especially when it comes to Disney films. But we can’t exactly compare Sleeping Beauty to Maleficent. Because unlike other live-action Disney films, like Cinderella, Aladdin, and Lion King. The focus and plot of the Maleficent live-action films are so different from that of Sleeping Beauty.
Although what we do love is that despite the major deviation from the original Sleeping Beauty, they still kept key elements from the animated film and adapted it into Maleficent. Without giving too much away, there was still a castle covered with vines (minus the thorns and add in flowers instead), Maleficent still transforms (but not into a dragon), and then there is true love (but not in the form that you would expect).
I actually watched this with my 5-year-old son. I am an official Disney kid. And I grew up watching everything and anything Disney. And I’m proud to say that my son actually cried while watching this movie! He is a five-year-old boy, but he was so interested in the movie that he quietly sat through the entire thing. Which just goes to show how good this movie is! So what are you waiting for, grab a screening for ‘Maleficent: Mistress of Evil’ this weekend!
