GAMES: Getting to know this year’s SEA esports games

September 6, 2019 Divine Sanchez

Curious about the esports games debuting in the 2019 SEAG? Here it is!

In case you haven’t heard, esports will be officially part of the upcoming 2019 Southeast Asian Games! This marks as a monumental event for us because it will be held here in the Philippines!

More than that, esports will be recognized as a medal sport in the SEA Games FOR THE FIRST TIME EVER. Yes, you heard it right. The first time!

And Sibol will be the official PH esports team representing us in the games with 6 teams corresponding to their games. Wondering which games are included? Well, here it is:

#1 Dota 2

Dota 2 is a household name in esports. It’s a multiplayer online battle arena (MOBA) and above all the games, it requires the most time and critical thinking. The game’s ultimate goal is to destroy your enemies’ “ancient” and before doing so, you have to engage in team fights, earn gold, and kill creeps.

Stemming from Blizzard’s Defense of the Ancients (DotA), Dota 2 is a more balanced game compared to its predecessor. This 5v5 game includes new characters, items, and map design.

#2 Starcraft II: Wings of Liberty

This one is a military science-fiction game from Blizzard in which you can choose from its three races–the Zergs, the Protoss, and the Terrans. The winner is determined by destroying your enemies’ building by building your own in the process.

#3 Mobile Legends: Bang Bang

Moonton’s Mobile Legends: Bang Bang (MLBB) is a fresh multiplayer online battle arena mobile game that has garnered millions of fans especially in South Asia. It’s a fast-paced  5v5 game and you can only use heroes you have already purchased. It is relatively easier to use compared to Dota 2.

#4 Arena of Valor

Tencent Games’ Arena of Valor or AOV is also a 5v5 MOBA mobile game. It basically adapts the mechanics of Dota 2 and MLBB with the ultimate goal of destroying the base of the opposing side.

The only difference it has with Mobile Legends is its in-game designs. And players are assigned to their respective teams–Team Red and Team Blue.

#5 Hearthstone

In Hearthstone, players compete on a 1v1 battle wherein you collect cards and build decks to defeat your opponent. Much like a real card game, Hearthstone has an interactive board to compete in with your enemy.

#6 Tekken 7

Tekken 7 is a digital hand-to-hand combat game by Bandai Namco. You can mix-and-match moves from your PC or console to defeat your enemy on a 1v1 battle. Plus, you have an array of heroes to choose from. From being an enjoyed activity whether you’re at home or at sleepovers, Tekken 7 has now entered the pro gaming scene.

The Philippines will be hosting the 30th SEA Games event after 14 years! So make sure to support our athletes this coming November 30 to December 11, 2019. And catch them at the FilOil Flying V Sports Arena in San Juan.
