FEATURES: Weathering With You raises the curtain for animated films

Makoto Shinkai’s Weathering With You confronts how the weather affects people’s lives in a subtle and romantic approach!

In 2016, ‘Your Name’ (Kimi no Nawa) easily captured our hearts with an unlikely sci-fi romance of Mitsuha and Taki. And once more, this 2019, the critically acclaimed director with his new animated feature, ‘Weathering With You‘ (Tenki no Ko) breaks through the norm, with a touch of reality in amidst the fantasy world he built.

‘Weathering With You’ is set in a futuristic Tokyo. A future where Tokyo experiences an abnormal summer rainstorm. And runaway Hodaka Morishima finds himself lost in the wilderness of Tokyo. Despite his big-city dreams, everything goes south after learning that an underage teenage boy like him won’t survive in Tokyo alone. However, he finds a ray of hope. After he becomes an occult magazine writer and meets the “sunshine girl”. After meeting the real-live “sunshine girl” in the persona of Hina Amano, an orphaned teenager.

Both teens get their lives intertwined in hopes to survive the city life. But despite their pure ideals, things don’t go their way. Up until they find themselves dealing with the fate of the world.

A subtle yet powerful take on climate change issues around the world

We all love teenage romances, no matter what the premise or narrative is. As far as we know, teenage romances pose the innocence that we all long. But the difference with Shinto’s work, especially Weathering With You is that there’s more to it than just a rollercoaster ride of a romance. Its sci-fi meets the traditional reality of Japan, bound in a natural disaster. And this time, the allegory for the movie is how humans perceive the weather. Especially climate change.

All throughout the film, we’ve seen people of different walks of life. All of them struggling in the current state of Tokyo’s unbearable rain. And the little bit of sunshine brightens up everyone, even just for a moment.

But what really breaks us was the choice Hina and Hodaka made. It only showed how a selfish act can turn the world around. It might sound a bit far-fetched but the mix of traditional Japan and sci-fi fantasy proved to be a wonderful treat for the heart.
