GAMES: The Chongqing Major

January 21, 2019 Victoria Luz

The Chongqing Major has started and the heat is on! And here are the Chongqing Major favorites to watch out for.

After the Bucharest Minor kickstarting 2019, the Chongqing Major has followed through. As the 2nd Major of the 2018 – 2019 Dota 2 Pro Circuit, it has marked the return of the hype for the journey towards the Aegis of Immortals.

The Chongqing Major has already started last January 19, 2019, in Chongqing, China. 15 teams who qualified through the regional qualifiers had already started the Group Stage matches over the weekend. There are 3 teams from Europe, China, and North America. On the other hand, there are 2 teams from Southeast Asia, South America, and CIS region. And as of now, the teams are already seeded accordingly for the Playoffs.

With the new meta in play, you can expect the gameplay of every team to be unpredictable. If you’ve noticed. the meta favors versatile and durable heroes that help the team synergy like Dazzle, Tusk, Lich, Io, Rubick and Centaur Warnrunner. A lot of teams are utilizing them and they have a high win rate. We’ve seen them in team compositions of teams like EHOME, PSG.LGD, Secret, and Virtus.pro.

The Chongqing Major Crowd Favorites

And in speaking of teams, there are teams that would really stand out in this Major. Favorites to win the Major itself are Virtus.pro, Secret, and PSG.LDG. So far, they are the teams who’ve had a consistent dominant run across tournaments ever since the 2018 -2019 started. They’ve become adaptable and used to the new meta, in drafting up until the very last clash in the game.

Virtus.pro

Virtus.pro

Honestly, Virtus.pro is a no-brainer. The CIS team has always been a strong contender in tournaments, especially in Majors. They’ve had the most Major titles won (5) and the most Valve-sponsored tournaments (6) as well. All of them are mechanically skilled and has great team synergy. VP has their eyes set in winning team fights as it is one of the major game changers in the game. They always have great combos to unleash and it utilizes their picks to its maximum potential. You can give them anything and they can make it work.

Considering that their team is composed of the best CIS players, VP shows their dominance all throughout a tournament. Mind you, they are a team to beat and feared by most teams because they can really be a difficult team to play with. Roman “RAMZES666” Kushnarev who plays position 1 for the team is considered one of the youngest and strongest players in the Dota 2 competitive scene.

Team Secret

Team Secret

Secret is another favored team to win the Chongqing Major. Well, some people might frown over Team Secret being a favorite. They’ve been a lackluster team for the past year and to be honest, their performance wasn’t as great as before. However, during the Kuala Lumpur Major, they’ve shown tremendous improvements. With their new lineup in place and acquiring a star rookie, Michal “Nisha” Jankowski, they’re back again to set things straight.

They’re the kind of team who wants to take control of the game as early as possible. Secret plays an aggressive early game. They try to invest in gold and EXP (experience) as soon as possible, to get their objectives early. It’s a good strategy, especially when their enemies’ cores are late game heroes. Another thing, Team Secret always go in securing their mid lane. For them, who secures the mid lane, secures the game. Either it’s MidOne or Nisha, they set their goals to cut off their enemy’s mid gold and secure theirs. This allows them to put pressure on their enemy.

Team Secret might have been dull for the past year, but they are surely back with a lot of punch this time.

PSG.LGD

LGD Gaming

No doubt, PSG.LGD has been the Chinese team who never felt out of the loop. A household name in the Dota 2 competitive scene, they are a team to beat as well .So far, they are China’s best hope in getting back the Aegis again. If you back track their achievements for the part 2 years, not once did they fall out of the top contending teams in every tournament.

PSG.LGD kickstarts a match with a strong early game. Just like Secret, they want to secure their lanes as much as possible. This goes for all players, not just their cores. As they build off a huge lead, they use this advantage to put pressure to the enemy and consistently secure team fights and towers. Not only that, but they are also mechanically gifted. High skilled players with amazing strategies and bold moves, so to speak.

Honorable Mentions

Aside from the top 3 favorites, there are still teams worth mentioning. I might sound biased but you still need to watch out for TNC and Fnatic. TNC might not have Kuku^ in their lineup for this tournament, Ryoyr is giving his best to fill in for him. They’ve improved quite a lot and considering that they took one game from Virtus.pro during the Group Stage matches. They surely know how to stun the crowd.

Same goes with Fnatic, another SEA team with 2 Filipinos in the roster. They’ve shown a strong start with their new lineup. Despite their lineup being formed in a few months, the team is showing great performances.

Also worth mentioning is EHOME. The home of the former Wings Gaming players, they are climbing their way up to the higher ranks. After showing a great record in the previous Bucharest Minor, they are one to watch out for. The 2 former Wings Gaming players were not TI champions for nothing.

All in all, we can expect a week long of thrilling matches in the Chongqing Major. Be sure to support your favorite team because things are just heating up.
