TIME CAPSULE: Top OPM Songs of 2018
December 19, 2018 Feather Casilan
The year was filled with great Pinoy music and we all just couldn’t ask for more. To honor that, here are the top OPM songs of 2018!
Songs released a year ago and even further back are still stirring the music industry. But songs that were only released this year has been streamed on Spotify over millions of times! Amazing, isn’t it?
Whoever said that OPM is dying just really don’t know anything about our music industry lol! As 2018 is coming to an end, let’s go back to the chart-topping songs of the year, shall we? Here’s our list of top OPM songs of 2018!
10. Ours by Ben&Ben
Ben&Ben has been truly making a name for themselves in the Philippine music industry. Their music career skyrocketed and I don’t wonder for a second why. Their song ‘Ours‘ was just officially released last month but it already garnered over 1,822,789 streams!
There are songs I haven’t figured out
The one of ours I think I know by now
We go on and on, and on
With the flow we go along, yeah
This song collaboration with Harv speaks of embracing love not only during the good times but as well as the bad times.
9. Marlboro Black by Because
Because is a 16-year old artist who has been taking the Philippine rap community by storm! And surely, one of the songs that made him known in our music industry is his very maangas song entitled ‘Marlboro Black‘. With its release this year, the song already has 5,087,964 streams!
Tatlong araw na tayong di nag uusap
Ni isa saatin dalawa’y ‘lang balak makiusap
Alam nating pareho tayong nagkulang
At ang tayo’y ‘la na ring patutunguan
‘Marlboro Black’ truly is a relatable song especially when you’ve experienced a toxic and complicated relationship. Ahhh, it would truly make you smoke your Marlboro black cigarette lol!
8. Pa-Umaga by Al James
Ahhh, Al James can really make everyone turnt. Al James is another name in our rap community who’s causing quite a stir. His single ‘Pa-Umaga’ can really make you sing along to each word! This song got me so LSS together with the other 6,822,775 streamers of this song!
Mag u-umaga nanaman
At ikaw ang katabi
Bakit ba andito pa
Di ka pa umuuwi
This song is about waking up in the morning with that person yet again. A lot of questions pop in your mind and all that you’re feeling at the sight of that person beside you are contradicting.
7. Kahit Ayaw Mo Na by This Band
This Band is a 4-piece band who believes that every emotion is equivalent to a song. Their aim is to touch the hearts of their listeners. And I’d like to say that they truly did! ‘Kahit Ayaw Mo Na’ touches the hearts and the 10,356,305 streamers of the song believes so too!
O, bakit ba kailangan pang umalis?
Pakiusap lang na ‘wag ka nang lumihis
Tayo’y mag-usap, teka lang, ika’y huminto
Wag mo ‘kong iwan, aayusin natin ‘to
Filipinos are suckers for heartbreaking songs! Sometimes I think y’ll are masochists huhu, kidding. But really now, ‘Kahit Ayaw Mo Na’ is such a powerful song and the pain are so etched in the lyrics.
6. Oks Lang by John Roa
John Roa rose in the music industry when he entered the Pilipinas Got Talent Season 4. Ever since then, his talents became known in the music career. His song entitled ‘Oks Lang’ that was only released this year, already has 15,405,630 streams!
Yakapin mo ako
Kahit hindi na totoo
Maiintindihan naman kita
Kung sawa ka na, kung sa’n ka sasaya
So painful… settling for less just because you love him/her that much. *Sigh!* I hope people would realize that they deserve nothing but the best. Stop torturing yourselves, please!
5. Sana by I Belong To The Zoo
I Belong To The Zoo has been giving us amazing songs, but ‘Sana’ won everyone’s hearts. With its painful and relatable lyrics, it truly is no shock that ever since its release this year, it garnered over 25,008,782 streams on Spotify!
Sana sinabi mo
Para di na umasang may tayo pa sa huli
Sana sinabi mo
Hahayaan naman kitang sumaya’t umalis
If only the people that we love would tell us what they truly feel, maybe it would hurt a lil less when they leave, right? Because really, who wants to hope for a happy ending but get left behind at the end… *Sigh*
4. ‘Di Na Muli by Janine Teñoso
Janine Teñoso‘s ”Di Na Muli‘ broke a lot of hearts. Especially when you’d hear it play while watching the heartbreaking movie ‘Sid & Aya: Not A Love Story‘. This song was streamed on Spotify 27,861,011 times!
Ang oras kapag hinayaang lumipas
Madarama mo hanggang bukas
Di mababawi muli
It’s true though… We all have to appreciate the happy moments that we have because sometimes, it’s over just like that. And the person who used to smile so bright for you will no longer do the next day. It’s sad, but it’s the harsh reality.
3. Kung ‘Di Rin Lang Ikaw by December Avenue
Ahhh, December Avenue. Of course, they are on this list! With their big name in the OPM industry and too many to count avid listeners, expect to see more of December Avenue next year. And of course, together with hit artist Moira dela Torre, their collaboration of ‘Kung ‘Di Rin Lang Ikaw‘ has accumulated 35,966,417 streams. Just wow!
Kung di rin tayo sa huli
Aawatin ang sarili na umibig pang muli
Kung di rin tayo sa huli
Aawatin ba ang puso kong ibigin ka?
This painful song speaks volumes, and it’s obvious a lot of you guys were able to relate to this song that’s why it’s on repeat! And come on, a heartbreaking song with a heart-shattering music video? Gahhhhhddd.
2. Tagpuan by Moira dela Torre
Speaking of Moira dela Torre… Her ‘Tagpuan‘ has over 40,992,066 streams on Spotify! Songs after songs, Moira proves over and over that she is chart-topping song maker! No wonder she landed number two on our list!
At nakita kita sa tagpuan ni Bathala
May kinang sa mata na di maintindihan
Tumingin kung saan sinubukan kong lumisan
At tumigil ang mundo
Nung ako’y ituro mo
Siya ang panalangin ko
Finally! A song that has a positive take on love lol! Feels good, doesn’t it? To finally receive that person who you were praying for. And it also inspires the listeners to just wait. Because somewhere out there, someone is praying for you too. When you’re ready, you’ll finally cross paths.
1. Mundo by IV of Spades
No shocker there. ‘Mundo’ by IV of Spades seems to be an anthem in the Philippines this year. If you don’t know this song, then you must be living under a rock! 2018 is a big year for IV of Spades and their band really made it in the music industry in a snap. This song has over 56,299,360 streams!
Aking sinta, ikaw na ang tahanan at mundo
Sa pagbalik, mananatili na sa piling mo
This song is really great. But a friendly reminder to everyone tho. Don’t make an individual your world when they’re just meant to be a person!
Overall, that was a fantastic year for us with such amazing OPM songs. I can’t wait for what’s in store for the Philippine music scene next year.
