TIME CAPSULE: December Blues – Sad Songs For The Christmas Season
December 12, 2018 Feather Casilan
It can’t be helped. Even if it’s supposed to be the joyous time of the year, it can surely bring back memories that you can no longer experience. Acknowledging your December blues, here’s my list of sad songs for the Christmas season!
Christmas decors are up and a lot of people seem to be having fun. But you’re really sad, aren’t you? You can’t help but reminisce back to last Christmas when your heart was at its happiest. And I can’t blame you. The cold weather can really make you wish you have someone holding you tight or someone who’d kiss you under the mistletoe. Ahhh, the torment of December blues.
Believe it or not, you’re not alone. Because the “Samahan ng Malalamig Ang Pasko” or SMP is with you! That’s why I enlisted here for y’all some of the sad songs for the Christmas season. Don’t cry… Maybe Santa Clause would give you a lover by the end of the year!
Merry Christmas Darling – The Carpenters
Merry Christmas Darling
We’re apart that’s true
But I can dream and in my dreams
I’m Christmasing with you
Missing someone this December? Your special someone is not with you to celebrate the yuletide season? Then ‘Merry Christmas, Darling’ by The Carpenters is the right song for you! You’ve prepped everything for the upcoming celebrations, but still, something is missing that you can’t fix. That’s why your only wish for Christmas is to be with that person. *Sigh* I know it’s hard, especially if you remember the fun Christmases you spent together. But maybe, just maybe, next Christmas, you’d finally be with them.
Christmas Lights – Coldplay
Those Christmas lights
Light up the street
Maybe they’ll bring her back to me
Then all my troubles will be gone
Ending things with the person you thought would be by your side til whatever end is so damn painful, isn’t it? And sometimes you’d find yourself walking alone in the cold night where you notice everything around you… The Christmas lights and decors, people singing joyously, and how the snow is not falling. It just doesn’t feel like the Christmas season to you when you no longer have that person with you. If you’re wishing for them to find their way back to you this holiday season, then ‘Christmas Lights’ by Coldplay is just for you.
Back To December – Taylor Swift
It turns out freedom ain’t nothing but missing you
Wishing I’d realized what I had when you were mine
I’d go back to December, turn around and make it all right
I go back to December all the time
This ‘Back To December’ by Taylor Swift one doesn’t scream “Christmas”. But when December comes to mind, it is associated with the yuletide season, right? The snow, the happiness and love all around you. But this year, you’re just filled with sorrow and regrets because you drove the person who means a lot to you away. It’s sad that now, when you think of the month December, it’s not about the holiday festivities anymore. It just takes you back to that one December when you lost something special with no way of getting it back. Trust me, I know exactly how it feels.
Christmases When You Were Mine – Taylor Swift
I know this shouldn’t be a lonely time
But there were Christmases when I didn’t wonder how you are tonight
‘Cause there were Christmases when you were mine
What’s with Taylor Swift and sad December songs? Hmmm… Anyway, ‘Christmases When You Were Mine’ again speaks volumes of how it feels to be lonely this Christmas. We’re all aware that it should be about happiness. But you can’t help but be the Grinch since your heart is breaking. If you could only go back to those Christmases when he/she was still yours, then you’d have the greatest Christmas gift ever.
Sana Ngayong Pasko – Ariel Rivera
Sana ngayong Pasko ay maalala mo pa rin ako
Hinahanap-hanap pag-ibig mo
At kahit wala ka na
Nangangarap at umaasa pa rin ako
Muling makita ka at makasama ka
Sa araw ng Pasko…
Yeah, really, why’d you had to leave? Arghhhhhhh! Kidding (not). ‘Sana Ngayong Pasko’ by Ariel Rivera is just really full of emotions, isn’t it? And it expresses what most of us don’t have the courage to say. You miss them, you’re yearning for them. Even though they are not with you anymore, you can’t stop wishing that they’d remember you this Christmas. Perhaps also, maybe, just maybe… You could see and be with them again during the most wonderful time of the year.
Pasko Na Sinta Ko – Gary Valenciano
Pasko na sinta ko hanap-hanap kita
Bakit magtatampo’t nilisan ako
Kung mawawala ka sa piling ko sinta
Paano ang Pasko, inulila mo
OPM songs just really hit you hard, don’t they? And ‘Pasko Na Sinta Ko’ by Gary Valenciano will always be the most heartbreaking Christmas song. It talks of how it’s already Christmas but he/she left. Now, the persona is lost and don’t know what to do this holiday season. Because it was meant to be your joyous moment together, happy holidays dedicated to him/her. *Sigh* now my heart is heavy grrrrr.
I know I know, it’s not like you have to force yourself to be happy just because everyone is joyous this holiday season. You do you! You don’t have to act tough and put on a smiling façade just because it’s Christmas. But, I’m really hoping that you’ll get through it. Enjoy some happy Christmas songs for a change or indulge yourself with the delicious meals! Or maybe, sing and dance to ‘Last Christmas’ and who knows? Maybe you’d find this song to be your positive Christmas love anthem! 😉
Santa Claus please, we just want someone to spoil this Christmas season with our love and gifts. And someone to kiss under the mistletoe… Kidding (no I’m totally not).
