The captain has fallen and Biniki Bottom is mourning. This goes out to all Spongebob Squarepants stans: remembering Stephen Hillenburg.
We definitely weren’t ready for this… The phenomenal creator of everyone’s favorite sponge passed at 57. We dedicate this write up Remembering Stephen Hillenburg to his loved ones and all Spongebob Squarepants stans out there.
Stephen Hillenburg was an astonishing marine biology teacher, animator, and cartoonist. Back when he was still teaching, he made an informative comic book about tide-pool animals called ‘The Intertidal Zone’ which he used to teach his students. Later on, he studied in California Institute of the Arts and then pursued his animation career. Acknowledging his potential, Nickelodeon offered him a job for the animated series ‘Rocko’s Modern Life’.
Hillenburg started working on the characters of his comic book ‘The Intertidal Zone’ around 1994, which then became the beloved animated series ‘Spongebob Squarepants’. The show premiered in 1999 and been airing since.
He was actively producing and directing the show until its third season and wrote and directed the first Spongebob Squarepants movie ‘The SpongeBob SquarePants Movie’ in 2004. The movie should have been the end for the series but Nickelodeon decided to keep making episodes with Hillenburg’s permission. On the second movie, ‘The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge Out of Water’ back in 2015, the marine lover artist went back to co-direct the film.
Spongebob Squarepants made a huge impact on the now early 20s young professionals (us included) because it aired during the most important era of their childhood when they can understand and appreciate the jokes and gimmicks of the series. It also enhanced their imagination, appreciation for friendship, and value for positivity. To this day, those kids who adored the show still feels the same. And with the passing of its creator, we can hear the sobbing of the kids inside of them.
The death of the captain
We don’t think CHOCOLATE is enough to comfort us on this one. Stephen Hillenburg announced last year, March, that he was diagnosed with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis easily known as ALS. His passing last November 26, was a shock to the world, especially for the Spongebob stans.
The creative genius received many awards for the animated series such as two Emmy Awards and six Annie Awards. He also, without reluctance, shared with us his love for the marine life and his passion to protect it. He was even given recognition by Heal the Bay for his efforts in promoting his advocacy. His vision for Spongebob Squarepants was also to make us appreciate the marine life even more and be encouraged to care for it.
Truly, this magnificent human being has touched our hearts and have made a huge impact in our childhood. Kudos to the captain, may your message live on, and may you rest in peace.
