ENCORE FEATURE: Bamboo and Why We Love Them
November 13, 2018 UDOU Team
The early 2000s was absolutely the best era of Pinoy Rock. And there’s no denying that 90’s babies became obsessed with it at some point, especially with Bamboo. So here’s to Bamboo and why we love them up until now!
Bamboo has always been one of the best rock bands in the history of OPM. Despite a rocky journey in the music industry and the eventual disbandment, we’ve all enjoyed their music up until now. So here’s to Bamboo and why we love them so much!
The Pinoy rock outfit has been a staple for every rock geek in the country. Their songs were the best “inuman session“ mix and sometimes, the best songs to sing while taking a shower. Sure, some of us might have outgrown classic Pinoy rock. But deep down, we know, that the love we have for Bamboo after all those years never faded.
So without further ado, here are the reasons why we still love Bamboo!
Their music, obvs…
Their songs have shown a different side of Pinoy rock that set them aside from other bands during their times. It was elegant, powerful, and meaningful and you can really tell that the lyrics are well thought of. Take ‘Hallelujah’ for an example. They have made it a remarkable song—an icon that everyone knows.
Sa bawat sumpang umiiyak, singil ko ay piso
Sa bawat lumuluhang dukha, alay ko’y dugo
May kasama ka kapatid, kaibigan
Hangga’t ako’y humihinga
May pag-asa pa
Bamboo Mañalac’s cold voice and fashion
Who wouldn’t? Well, aside from his cool do, the vocalist has a significant voice. His voice, together with the superb instrumentals that accompany their songs are a match made in heaven. Whenever we hear their song on the radio, his voice brings chills.
He’s also one of rock geeks and musicians’ inspiration in fashion. A scarf and a coat combo never looked that good but Bamboo Mañalac begs to differ!
Early 2000’s commercials!
Yup, you heard us right! We definitely loved the commercials where Bamboo was featured. It was varied and showed the band’s personality. From Colt 45, Nescafe, Pepsi and Jag, Bamboo showed that they’re not just a band, they’re an icon to the community! We know you love them too!
Brave, Bold and Dedicated
Bamboo is known also for their varied songs. They have a wide range of songs in English and Filipino and try to cater to their audience without compromising their craft. But what really sets them apart is how they take a stand with the use of their songs.
Come to think of it, the majority of their songs are political but in a good way. They are shady in the most elegant and professional way possible. Remember ‘Tatsulok’? if you dug deep to the meaning of the lyrics, you’ll find yourself hearing the voice of the band, sharing principles and values in life.
Hindi pula’t dilaw tunay na magkalaban
Ang kulay at tatak ay di syang dahilan
Hangga’t marami ang lugmok sa kahirapan
At ang hustisya ay para lang sa mayaman
And of course, they reek of Pinoy Pride! Their songs are not just their values in life but sometimes their personal take on what the local community struggles with. Even up until now, their songs are relevant and can keep you thinking your outlook as a Filipino citizen. ‘Noypi’ really makes us want to wear our colors proud!
Hoy, pinoy ako!
Buo aking loob, may agimat ang dugo ko
Hoy, oh pinoy ako!
May agimat ang dugo ko
Isn’t that just nostalgic? We’re pretty sure you’re missing them too! So check them out on Spotify and listen to their bests hits of all time to your heart’s content!
Bamboo has and will always be a classic. They will always have a special place in our hearts as one of the pioneers of their era’s Pinoy rock.
