The Growth of Sinulog’s Nightlife
February 1, 2018 UDOU TEAM
Sinulog traditions include attending mass to honor the Santo Niño, enjoying the Grand Parade’s festivities, and joining the Fluvial Procession. However, new practices (if we can call it that way) have popped up over the years for the younger generation. Here are some of the best nightlife hotspots for Sinulog!
If the daytime has the Sinulog Grand Parade, the evening has LifeDance! This music festival celebrated its sixth installment this 2018, bringing international DJs like Yellow Claw, Coone, Arty, and FEHRPLAY. They’ve also focused on showing off the best in the local music scene like Ace Ramos, Patty Tiu of DEUCE, and Nix Damn P! to name a few. LifeDance is best known for accurately depicting which trend will explode in the EDM scene per year, and for 2018 they went with hard trap.
Plus63 Music and Arts Festival
The newer kid on the block, the organizers of the Plus63 Music and Arts Festival wanted to create a destination for international acts. They kicked off the first edition in 2016 with Swedish House Mafia’s Steve Angello, and began to bring in bigger acts year after year. 2018 saw Dutch DJ duo Showtek perform alongside DJs X-Factor, Marc Marasigan, Gino V., and MC Victor Pring. One thing’s for certain with Plus63–they’re only getting bigger from here.
The Sentral Cebu
One of Cebu’s hotspots (even on a regular day) is The Sentral Cebu. Established in 2016, they pride themselves as the city’s all-hip-hop bar and lounge while providing a space for local DJs to show off their skills. They have a crazy Sinulog Week Mayhem special that features both Cebuano and Manileño DJs coming together to celebrate the festival. Make sure you come early though, the place can get packed!
LIV SUPER CLUB
Cebu’s premiere luxury club has brought a modern twist to Sinulog’s traditions. Other than bringing in outstanding Manila DJs perform their residents, they produce a stage for bands! LIV’s Nation Fest 2018 saw pop-rock band Freestyle and Rivermaya’s ex-vocalist Jason Fernandez perform a set for the audience. Partyers also got the chance to see Thailand-based DJ/producer La Crème! LIV has everything for everyone.
Rumour just set up shop last October but they should probably get a bigger space soon. Their grand opening featured DJs like Tom Taus and Funk Avy, placing them on the map of Cebu nightlife. Sinulog Weekend 2018 was a wild one for Rumour–DJ X-Factor and MC Victor Pring behind the decks, dancing girls on the booth, and the collective yelling of “Pit Senyor!” echoing the cramped space. We’re betting Sinulog 2019 will get wilder than the last one!
The AfterParty team jumped from venue to venue but we made sure to experience it the best way possible: with a bottle of Bacardi! That’s one way to enjoy your Sinulog Weekend. See you next year!
