Oh Wonder Set to Perform in Manila This February 2018
January 31, 2018 UDOU TEAM
Oh Wonder is coming back to Manila next month! The alternative-pop duo will be playing three Ayala Malls shows this coming February thanks to Karpos Multimedia.
The Effortlessness of Oh Wonder
Prior to their formation, both members were already heavily involved in music. Josephine Vander Gucht performed as a solo artist going by both her own name and the moniker LAYLA while Anthony West played with Tonight is Goodbye, Futures, and We The Wild. Upon forming Oh Wonder, they decided to go for a more unorthodox approach with recording their record. A regular album cycle contains writing, recording, and producing all the tracks prior to releasing, but West and Vander Gucht wrote, recorded, and released one song every month from their home studio in South-East London. They finally released their eponymous debut album in September 2015, selling over 500,000 copies worldwide and entering the Billboard 200.
Unlike “Oh Wonder”, they began the songwriting process for their second album in an Airbnb they rented out in Brooklyn. They completed a year-long world tour and returned to London to continue the record. The self-produced sophomore record titled “Ultralife” was released in March 2017 and received positive response from critics. Rolling Stone gave the album four out of five stars, praising the duo’s “utter effortlessness of their music” and calling their brand of alt-pop “modern, beautifully crafted and often catchy as hell.”
Third Time’s the Charm
Their upcoming performances will mark the band’s third time in the Philippines: they first appeared for GoodVybes Fest 2016 where Raymund Marasigan got to talk shop with their drummer, then July last year as part of their 55-date “Ultralife” world tour. The duo’s energy vibrated throughout everyone in the venue, with both West and Vander Gucht sincerely calling that show the best show they ever played.
