Cebu’s Sinulog Festival only gets grander every year! Join us this weekend in celebrating the Sto. Niño with amazing local and international acts.
The History of Sinulog
One of the Philippines’ most popular festivals, Sinulog attracts an average of one to two million Filipinos from all over the country every year. The festival is actually celebrated the whole month of January with the biggest weekend falling around the third week every year. Its history dates back to 1521, when the Portuguese explorer Ferdinand Magellan arrived in Cebu. He planted the cross on the shores of Cebu to claim the territory for Spain. Around 800 natives of the island were baptized to the Roman Catholic Church alongside Rajah Humabon (baptized as Don Carlos) and Hara Humamay (baptized as Queen Juana). When Queen Juana received the image of the Child Jesus, it was said that she danced with joy bearing the image. The other natives followed her example and that scene was regarded as the first ever Sinulog.
So Much to Do!
Sinulog Weekend offers a variety of events for everyone! Dance along with the mesmerizing moves at the Sinulog Grand Parade, a whole-day street parade filled with constigents in bright colored costumes and music courtesy of drums, trumpets, and native gongs. Cheer for your favorite dance crews from the Street Dancing Category, Free Interpretation, and the Sinulog-based categories during the Sinulog Contest. Brave the waters with other devotees during the religious Fluvial Procession; follow a statue of the Sto. Niño on a beautifully decorated boat decked with hundreds of flowers and candles. The end of the procession features a reenactment of the island’s baptism, then continues on to a more solemn procession along the major streets of Cebu City. Apart from the traditional events, Sinulog Weekend has seen major modern twists in its festivities. Both local and international artists grace Cebu to celebrate the feast, play awesome music, and get everyone in the spirit of enjoying life with a little help from our good friend Bacardi!
