RJAM 100’s crowd proved to be a bunch of wild animals, and we mean that in the best way possible. The event might have been the prelude to Rakrakan Festival 2018 but those who found themselves at B-SIDE last Saturday acted like it was a full-blown festival!

What Went Down

Although RAKISTA announced that gates open at 6:00 PM, many fans took the liberty of arriving earlier. They proved to be the smartest out of everyone who came that night because they didn’t have to stand in a queue that reached all the way outside of the venue! One would think that the line should get shorter as the night passes, but it just seemed to get longer and longer. These folks waited patiently as they listened to VIE, Maryzark, and Subculture kicking off RJAM 100 from the outside.

Inside, the crowd was just starting to get hot. Bulacan-based group Sagip Adik Foundation enjoyed their freedom by dressing up—or in their bassist’s case, dressing down—in a variety of costumes. The 13-piece (you read that right) got the crowd to collectively swear at them, but by the end of their set you could tell that they did it out of love for their shared passion.

With RJAM 100’s lineup, it wouldn’t be crazy to think that the event is the actual festival; bands that carry legendary statuses echoed the walls of B-SIDE throughout the night. Razorback’s fiery performance prompted a select few, though to the dismay of the photographers, to start crowd surfing. Unlike a majority of events, the only thing separating the crowd from the photo pit were two plastic twines hanging from one end of the stage to the other. Feet kept on coming at the head of those in front but complains were kept to themselves. This was, after all, a rock show.

Three-piece metal band Skychurch graced us with an electric set before heading out to do a few shows in Japan next month. Kjwan didn’t disappoint as they played a raw, adrenalized set. The band’s final song “Pintura” sent the crowd into a frenzy and much like for those who played before them, no one was ashamed to sing it back. RJAM 100’s star-studded lineup included Ely Buendia, Wendell Garcia, Dok Sergio, Jerome Velasco playing as PUPIL. WilaBaliW brought honor to the ‘Baliw’ (crazy) part of their band name as they kept the energy flowing for a supposedly tired crowd. Rock-reggae group The Chongkeys brought some groove to B-SIDE for their first gig of the year, expanding the variety of the lineup’s music.

Ending the night were Philia, Saydie, and EVEN—three heavy rock bands that encapsulates female badassery. Philia’s Arci Muñoz, Saydie’s Kat Taylor, and EVEN’s Trish Reyes are living proof that there is a place in the rock world no matter who you are. EVEN capped off the early hours of Sunday with their glitch art-inspired music video for “Astra”.

Rakrakan Festival 2018

As the official pre-Rakrakan gig, RJAM 100 is the perfect prelude to the shenanigans of Rakrakan Festival 2018. With 120 different artists and six stages spread out the ASEANA City Concert Grounds in Parañaque, February 24 is a date you should block off. A confirmed lineup is yet to be announced but we’ve got our fingers crossed that we’ll see those who played last Saturday on the big stage next month!

Get your passes from SM Tickets before they’re gone. See you next month!
