Before the festivities of Rakrakan Festival 2018, join RAKISTA and friends on Saturday, January 6 at B-SIDE for RJAM100! Catch your favorite local rock acts share the stage to hype you up for this year’s edition of Rakrakan presents: OPM Against Drugs.
The Best of OPM
Rakrakan Festival was formed in 2013 to showcase what OPM can truly offer. The first installment saw 50 bands ranging from Urbandub to Gracenote spread over two stages at the SM Mall of Asia Coral Way Open Parking. A skateboarding exhibition and competition also showcased their scene—one that many aren’t familiar with—to a major Manila audience. RAKISTA’s vision proved to be successful as they managed to hold a Rakrakan Festival every year, with each episode only getting bigger and better. By 2015, Rakrakan Festival expanded to 70 bands and three stages: the Move Stage, Mosh Stage, and Groove Stage.
They rebranded the event to Rakrakan presents: OPM Against Drugs in 2017 in response to the four drug-related deaths during the Closeup Forever Summer rave the year before. This resulted in Cheats, Taken by Cars, Techy Romantics, BP Valenzuela, KZ Tandingan, and Bullet Dumas pulling out at the last minute. Although Rakista left no comments as to why, Valenzuela and Dumas spoke on their own behalves: Valenzuela claims that she wasn’t informed of the message the organizers were trying to spread, and because of her strong opposition against the current administration’s war on drugs, decided to back out. Dumas shared the same sentiments regarding the relentless killing, and that his personal beliefs and convictions would be challenged if he continued his set.
