Ed Sheeran Tops Spotify’s Year in Music 2017 List

2017 is the year of the Sheeran—on Spotify, at least. The streaming service’s annual Year in Music list tackles categories such as Top 5 Artists, Most Streamed Female Artists, and Top 5 Albums among many others.

 

Year of the Sheeran

 

According to Spotify’s records, Ed Sheeran’s “÷” was the most streamed album with 3.1 billion streams. His other accolades include most globally streamed artist and his single “Shape of You” set a record for most streamed song in Spotify history with 1.4 billion plays. In total, he gathered 6.3 billion streams in 2017 alone. Even after the accidents he accumulated throughout the year, he still came out on top!

 

Runner-Ups

 

Losing his two-year top artist streak is Drake who came in a close second place, then “Starboy” singer The Weeknd in third. Kendrick Lamar followed and EDM pop duo The Chainsmokers rounding up the list. The top four artists are also in the same positions for Most Streamed Male Artists, with Daddy Yankee replacing The Chainsmokers for the fifth spot.

 

2017 was a big year for both hip hop and Latin music; hip hop streams increased 74% over the past year while Latin music increased by 110% thanks to Billboard hits like “Despacito” and “Mi Gente”. Take a look at the complete list of victors below!
