Vans Warped Tour to End in 2018

The Vans Warped Tour

After crossing the United States (US) for more than two decades, founder Kevin Lyman has announced the end of the beloved annual Vans Warped Tour. Please take a moment of silence to commemorate all the bands on their lineup that we listened to during our teen years.

A Long History

The first lineup in 1995 included bands such as Deftones, No Doubt, and Sublime. It wasn’t until 1996 that Vans became a sponsor, and they stuck with Warped ever since. It began as a tour to feature skate punk and third-wave ska bands, but they were quickly overtaken by the pop punk and metalcore phenomenas. As the tour ranges from June to August, their core audience became kids out of school for the summer.

It wasn’t until the early 2000s when Warped began to reach its peak. Then-upcoming bands stayed with the tour year after year, building a fanbase that quickly spread internationally: Blink-182, Fall Out Boy, Paramore, and My Chemical Romance are just some of the names who have thanked Warped for shining a light on them. With the popularity of their lineup, the tour itself also became popular worldwide, spreading to Australia, Japan, Canada, and the United Kingdom during certain tour cycles.

Facing Facts

When the decade turned, Warped Tour’s popularity declined. Fresh bands came in to replace the ones that have turned mainstream, but some of their original audience had also grown out of that habit. Lyman stated in his farewell letter that 2018 will be the tour’s last full cross-country run. He also reminisced on the golden days of the tour, thanking all of the fans, bands, and peers he’s met along the way. Lyman mentioned plans of a big 25th anniversary celebration in 2019 and hinted at a mix of bands on the lineup.

Being on the other side of the world never stopped us from finding some of our favorite bands that came out of the Warped Tour. Thank you, Kevin Lyman! You truly did change the music scene forever.
