Fans of the late Leonard Cohen took Montreal by storm for the family’s celebration of the beloved musician. Tower of Song: A Memorial Tribute to Leonard Cohen marks his one year death anniversary and featured artists who are heavily influenced by his works.

Death of a Ladies’ Man

With a career spanning six decades, Leonard Cohen released 14 studio albums alongside over ten poetry collections and two novels. His last studio album “You Want It Darker” received praise from fans and critics—rightfully so, as he died in his sleep a few weeks after the album’s release. Cancer was a contributing cause, but his death was the result of a fall at his home. Cohen’s final book “The Flame” includes unpublished poetry and selections from his notebook and is set for an October 2018 release.

A Heartwarming Evening

Singer-songwriter and eldest child Adam Cohen announced the tribute event with some of his father’s last words, “My father left me with a list of instructions before he passed: ‘Put me in a pine box next to my mother and father. Have a small memorial for close friends and family in Los Angeles…and if you want a public event do it in Montreal.”

Sting, Elvis Costello, Lana Del Rey, Feist, Coeur de Pirate, k.d. lang, Bettye Lavette, Courtney Love, The Lumineers’ Wesley Schultz and Jeremiah Fraites, Damien Rice, BØRNS, Ron Sexsmith, Patrick Watson, Adam Cohen, Courtney Love, and other surprise/late additions gathered to honor the legacy left behind. Words of love were parted by other figures; Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau was present as his father and Cohen were close friends, while actor Seth Rogen did a reading of “Field Commander Cohen” after lifting the mood.

The world really did lose a very special soul. Thank you for everything, Leonard Cohen! We still miss you dearly.
