OCTOBER 26, 2017 UPDATE: Ed Sheeran’s team has released a statement regarding the Asia tour. Manila, Osaka, and two Tokyo shows are rescheduled to April 8, April 11, April 13, and April 14 respectively. Taipei, Seoul, Jakarta, and both Hong Kong shows are cancelled indefinitely.
“The A Team” singer Ed Sheeran has cancelled five of his upcoming Asia tour dates. Earlier this week, he fractured his right wrist, left elbow, and a rib in a bike accident.
Unlucky or Clumsy?
When he’s not shooting cameos, Ed Sheeran is busy getting hurt. This isn’t the first time he’s gotten nasty injuries. He was born with only one eardrum, and if that wasn’t enough, he’s managed to burst his only eardrum twice—the first when he was 18, and the other 2015 after jumping off a yacht at a high altitude. He underwent graft surgery to replace it, although he says he only has 25% of hearing left in that ear. During his 2016 break, he nearly lost a foot in Iceland when he accidentally stepped on a geyser and suffered severe burns.
He seems to have the worst luck with beer bottles after slicing his hand twice, the first in Nashville and the other before a gig. To top things off, he’s had the privilege (is it really though?) to be cut open by English royalty. During a faux knighting by Princess Beatrice of York alongside James Blunt, her royal highness accidentally grazed Sheeran’s cheek with a sword. He quickly went to the hospital, got stitched up, and went back to the party like normal.
According to multiple sources, Sheeran was knocked down by a car in Suffolk, London. Instead of heading straight to hospital, he went to a local pub after the mishap; it wasn’t until the early morning after when he woke up in pain did he decided to go to the hospital. He confirmed the injuries via Instagram, sharing a photo of his arms in a cast and a sling. He captioned, “Ive had a bit of a bicycle accident and I’m currently waiting on some medical advice, which may affect some of my upcoming shows. Please stay tuned for further news. Ed x”
Two days ago, Sheeran’s team confirmed the canning of five dates on the Asia leg of his “Divide” tour via Instagram: Taipei on October 22, Osaka on October 25, Seoul on October 29, Tokyo on October 31 and November 1, and finally Hong Kong on November 4 and 5. Instead, he’ll kick off his Asia tour here in Manila on November 7 at the MOA Grounds, followed by Jakarta, Singapore, Kuala Lumpur, Bangkok, Mumbai, and Dubai until late November.
A visit to my doctors confirmed fractures in my right wrist and left elbow that will leave me unable to perform live concerts for the immediate future. Sadly, this means that the following shows will not be able to go ahead as planned: Taipei, Osaka, Seoul, Tokyo and Hong Kong. I’m waiting to see how the healing progresses before we have to decide on shows beyond that. Please stay tuned for more details. PS – Ed isn’t typing this as he has both arms casted/bandaged.
Dammit, Ed! We’re beyond thankful that Manila didn’t get cancelled but please take care of yourself. Sending you positive vibes for a speedy recovery and see you in a few weeks!
