19 of the music industry’s most influential artists have been nominated as part of the 2018 Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame. Unlike the previous classes, none of this year’s nominees were proposed to be inducted during their first year of eligibility.

A Quick Rundown

The Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame saw its first class in 1986 with four categories: performers, early influences, non-performers, and lifetime achievements. Artists are eligible for induction in the Performers category 25 years after the release of their first record and it they must have “influence and significance to the development and perpetuation of rock and roll.” Unarguably the most popular category, inductees include Green Day in 2015, the Beatles in 1988, Buddy Holly and Elvis Presley in 1986, and even N.W.A. and Tupac Shakur in 2016 and 2017 respectively.

Early Influences are for artists “whose music predated rock and roll but had an impact on the evolution of rock and roll and inspired rock’s leading artists.” They are selected by a committee and the public has zero control over the inductees. Legendary names like musician and luthier Les Paul, Louis Armstrong, Nat King Cole, and Billie Holiday are just some of the celebrated names in the category.

“Songwriters, producers, disc jockeys, record executives, journalists and other industry professionals who have had a major influence on the development of rock and roll.” fall under Non-Performers, however some inductees are also performers. George “the Fifth Beatle” Martin, Quincy Jones, Beatles manager Brian Epstein, and music executive Clive Davis have all had the pleasure of being inducted. The Non-Performer Lifetime Achievement includes Rolling Stone co-founder Jann Wenner, Warner Bros. Records VP Seymour Stein, and A&M Records co-founders Herp Albert and Jerry Moss being the latest inductees in 2006.

Your 2018 Nominees Are…

Bon Jovi, Kate Bush, The Cars, Depeche Mode, Dire Straits, Eurythmics, the J. Geils Band, Judas Priest, LL Cool J, MC5, The Meters, The Moody Blues, Radiohead, Rage Against the Machine, Rufus featuring Chaka Khan, Nina Simone, Sister Rosetta Tharpe, Link Wray, and The Zombies! Voting runs until December 5 and fans can choose their top 5 picks. The “fan’s ballot” will be tallied alongside 600 other “rock expert ballots.” The artists who receive the highest number of votes and more than 50 percent of the vote are inducted.

Our top five? Kate Bush, Depeche Mode, Radiohead, Rage Against the Machine, and Nina Simone. We’ve got our fingers crossed for our ballet to go five by five this year! Best of luck to all the nominees and, of course, thank you for your influence in the music industry.
