Kevin Hart, Beyoncé, and More Contribute to Harvey Relief Effort
August 31, 2017 UDOU TEAM
Hurricane Harvey has killed at least 37 and flooded thousands of residencies in Houston, Texas. Volunteers, rescue operations, and shelters are working 24/7 to keep as many possible safe from the worst natural disaster Texas has seen in decades.
Deep in the Heart of Texas
Drawing comparisons to Hurricane Katrina’s New Orleans hit, Harvey broke the US record for rainfall from a single storm. In just 24 hours, 26 inches of rain disrupted the coastal cities of Beaumont and Port Arthur. 11 trillion gallons of rain have been poured over the state with an estimated 14 trillion more. 13 million people are currently affected and 32,000 of them have sought help in shelters.
We could give you more numbers, but the ones noted down are more than enough to show the trouble Texas is currently facing. In their time of need, celebrities have come together to show moral and financial support.
Stepping Up to the Challenge
It started when actor-comedian Kevin Hart challenged his many well-off celebrity friends to donate $25,000 each for the state to buy the proper resources they need. On top of that, he also urged them to spread the challenge and create a donation chain. Hart increased his donation to double the tag and set up a Red Cross donation account. It currently has over $1 million worth of donations from 7,000 people.
Beyoncé pledged to her support to her native of Houston through her BeyGOOD team and pastor. The Kardashian-Jenner clan donated $500,000 to the American Red Cross and U.S. Salvation Army, while artists like T.I., Nicki Minaj, Jennifer Lopez with boyfriend A-Rod, and DJ Khaled took on Hart’s original challenge. On the other side of the musical spectrum, country singer Chris Young offered $100,000 to relief efforts while Lady Antebellum are sending all their merchandise proceeds from their Dallas show.
The U DO U team might be on the other side of the world, but we’re sending all our love to Texas. For those interested in donating, Kevin Hart’s account is still open, or visit redcross.org.
