The Legend of Badu
Born Erica Abi Wright, she changed the spelling of her name to ‘Erykah’ believing her original name was a “slave name”; ‘Badu’ comes from her favorite jazz scat sound. At 14 years old she was free-styling for a local Dallas radio station alongside famed jazz musicians. Her demo ‘Country Cousins’ got her a record deal with Universal Records and released her debut album in 1997.
‘Baduizm’ also met with critical and commercial success, debuting at number two on the Billboard charts. The lead single ‘On & On’ remains to be one of her most adored songs, and eventually won her a Grammy Award for Best Female R&B Vocal Performance along with Best R&B Album.
From there on, she released four studio albums and two mixtapes—the latest being ‘But You Caint Use My Phone’ where she collaborated with Pharrell Williams, Drake, and André 3000.
Badu Vs Everythang
After a seven-year touring hiatus, Erykah Badu kicked off her ‘Badu Vs Everythang Tour’ earlier this year. Her appearances include Funk Fest, FYF, and Meadows Festival. The tour covers Europe, the United States, and other Asian countries.
The producers of the annual Malasimbo Music & Arts Festival announced her Manila date earlier this July. She’ll be hypnotizing us with her idyllic tunes in the Harbour Garden Tent at Sofitel Manila, Pasay City. Hence, we’re beyond stoked to experience Mama Badu’s enticing energy. Therefore, the tickets will be available starting August 1 so make sure to stay tuned to their official Facebook event.
She’s always had a knack for performing effortlessly trippy shows, with her latest show at the Brooklyn Bowl proving it. 20 years in the industry and she hasn’t lost an inch of her soul.
