“Sit down. Be Humble.”
I would hold off on releasing an album this year if I were a rapper, as Kendrick Lamar is slowly creeping back into the scene. Following a cryptic Instagram post that lead to the 4th installment of “The Heart” series (LISTEN: The Heart pt. 4).
Kendrick’s latest release seems to follow the vein of Heart pt. 4, Kendrick is calling out the rest of the rap world. The irony that is presented in the video is apparent as there are scenes that are a show of opulence as Kendrick raps ‘Sit down. Be Humble.”. Even the trap beat (something Kendrick typically doesn’t do) plays into Kendrick’s satirical attack on the current state of rap.
Kendrick is keeping it real.
“I’m so fuckin sick and tired of the Photoshop. Show me somethin’ natural like afro on Richard Pryor.”,
That’s been the consistent message in Kendrick’s songs. In Heart pt. 4, K-Dot repeats the words “Don’t tell a lie on me, I won’t tell the truth ‘bout you”. In “Humble”, Kendrick is exposing the ills of modern day rappers. He puts himself apart, “This that Grey Poupon, that Evian, that TED talk”, basically saying that he is on a different level from everyone else.
Kendrick’s new album drops April 7.
It’s been a big month for Hiphop – Drake releases, Chance The Rapper interviews on fatherhood, Biggie’s 20th death anniversary, Tupac to the Hall of Fame, even local artists are joining in with amazing releases (READ: Curtismith Drops 2 EPs). With these up-and-coming hiphop artists, we need more venues for them! Hiphop nights, anyone?
