Tupac in Black and White

It’s been 20 years since the murder of Lesane Parish Crooks, more commonly known as Tupac Shakur, but his contributions to music are still felt to this day and sometimes he’s even still heard (LISTEN: Kendrick Lamar’ Mortal Man). Tupac laid the groundwork for rap that isn’t just about drugs, money, and girls. Tupac rapped about the realities and struggles that people go through everyday.

Tupac is among this year’s inductees which include ELO, Joan Baez, Journey, Nile Rodgers, Pearl Jam, and Yes. While Tupac and Rock and Roll might not be the most likely pairing, the spirit of dissent is clearly present in both. When N.W.A. was inducted into the hall prominent member Ice Cube asked “Are we rock and roll?” he contiues by saying “You goddamn right we rock and roll. Rock and roll is not an instrument. Not even a style of music. Rock and roll is a spirit”.

“You goddamn right we rock and roll”

So far only six rap acts have been inducted. Tupac joins Run-D.M.C., Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five, the Beastie Boys, Public Enemy, and N.W.A. and while Tupac is the latest he should hardly be the last

The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction ceremonies will be on April 7, 2017 at the Barclays Center.  Snoop Dogg, fellow Deathrow Records artist, will induct Tupac into the hall. Tupac and Snoop also released “2 of Amerikaz Most Wanted” 20 years ago. Poetic justice at it’s very best.
