Skrillex ‘Recess’ EP Turns 3 Years Old, What’s He Up To Now?

Skrillex Live

We greet a happy birthday to the Skrillex “Recess” Long Play album as it turns three this week. Interestingly, it was the only full-length album release from the dubstep star!

Skrillex released several EPs before rolling out the famous “Recess”. While the album itself is a little obscure, you probably know him by his “Bangarang” dubstep hit.

If you are a casual listener like me, you’ll likely just say Skrillex’s music falls under dubstep or EDM. We have never been more (slightly) wrong. There’s actually a subgenre for his hits.

Skrillex and Brostep

Brostep is not dubstep made by dudes and bros at the gym. It’s certainly not full of “Bro, do you even lift?” lyrics. The subgenre is mainly influenced by hip-hop with its vocal samples and beats. I’d say that brostep could be one of the most popular subgenres and is often confused with the main genre of dubstep itself (although that is still technically correct).

There are some Skrillex tracks that can be classified as other dubstep subgenres. “Make it Bun Dem” leans toward Ganja Step with its reggae vibe. I fell in love with this track when it blasted during a particular mission in Ubisoft’s “Far Cry 3” video game.

Skrillex “Recess” Favorite Tracks

My personal favorite in the full-length album would be “Coast is Clear” featuring Grammy award winner Chance the Rapper. The track sums up the brostep subgenre although some may argue that it sounds more hiphop than EDM.

Skrillex Where Are You Now?

Besides recently releasing the “Purple Lamborghini” track for DC’s “Suicide Squad film,” Skrillex also had a hand in the production of Incubus’s new album. He is still also doing live gigs with his next one at the Day Club Palm Springs pool parties next month.

If you want to hear more of Skrillex but don’t know where to start, I suggest listening to “Bangarang” and “Scary Monsters and Nice Sprites” extended plays. I also recommend you to listen to these EPs with good headphones particularly those that can handle those low wobbles (they hit lower than 20hz AFAIK). You can’t really enjoy Skrillex tracks without a good pair of headsets or booming speakers.
